Welcome! My name is Kål Berit Sens. I am 26 years old and come from Dalarna, the heart of Sweden. I am a folkmusician and a musical artist. This winter I will be working my second season as an actor on Santaworld (Tomteland) situated in Gesunda, not far away from Mora. It´s magic!
I also give lessons in a very old method to communicate with others in great distanses, and it is called to kula (swedish). It´s a sort of high-pitched yodelling that can be heard over hill and dale. You can call on people or cattle.
Since November 2009 I have my own artistic company "It makes Sens".
The method to call or to kula, had its peak during the 16th and the 17th century. This was an important instrument for the women and men who spent their summers in the forest with their herd of cows, goats and sheep. If you lost a cow for example, you could just call to the others, and they would keep an eye out. If someone found the lost cow, the person could simply call back that the creature was safe. There is different melodies for different occasions/situations. If I should place calling on a scale, it would be right in between singing and shouting. You can hear it miles away if the weather is good. The forest could be dangerous, with wolfs and bears, so it was important to keep your cattle safe.
Some people still use this to communicate with eachother today, but the number increases with every year. Not many youngsters has heard of this, and most of them have never heard someone call. That is one of the reasons why I teach this, so we will remember the old ways!
